Tyler Skeen Essay 1 Assignment Phil 141 Fall 2016 Frank In this philosophical paper I will be examining the validity and effectiveness of Anselm s Ontological Argument on the existence of God. I will begin by presenting Anselm’s Ontological Argument from the ground up. This includes the argument, basic idea, initial assumptions, Anselm’s definition of god, and Anselm s distinctions which are needed to completely understand the nature of my argument. Furthermore, I will present concepts of logic and define what makes an argument valid, and circular argument because they are necessary for understanding the validity of this argument. Following, I will evaluate criticism of Guanilo on the Ontological Argument and how it affects the argument. I will conclude by presenting my evaluation of the argument’s validity and effectiveness. I argue that Anselm’s Ontological Argument fails, because the Ontological Argument is a circular argument and relies heavily on the initial assumption which proves nothing about the exist ence of god. Before, I assesses the validity and effectiveness of Anselm’s Ontological Argument, I will present the argument how it was presented to me in class. Anselm follows a basic idea that from the very concept of God we can prove God exists. Anselm uses the definition of God to carry this argument. Anselm defines God as that being than which none greater can be conceived (initial assumption).
